The Journal of Ferrari History

Cavallino is the journal of Ferrari history, covering Ferraris old and new for over 40 years. It's the most reliable, most trusted source of everything Ferrari. Ever since the first issue in 1978 Cavallino presents extensive stories and detailed information from knowledgeable experts and enthusiasts who share the passion for Ferrari. All Ferraris are unique, and each one has its own chassis serial number. This is how the Ferrari world keeps track of all the great cars. Cavallino is the only publication that prints the serial number for every Ferrari mentioned in our stories, articles, and race results.

Thirty years ago, my wife Kim and I watched a television documentary about the original Mille Miglia race in Italy (run from 1927-1957) and the newer Mille Miglia (basically a tribute rally) now run annually. We are both of Italian descent, are passionate about all thing Italian and have been driving together for over 40 years. We were intrigued and driving in the Mille Miglia became high on our bucket list.

Between 1927 and 1957, the Mille Miglia was one of the most frightening tests there was. Ferrari gained their first victory there in 1948 as a manufacturer with Clemente Biondetti and Giuseppe Navone in a Ferrari 166 SC Allemano Coupé. Ferrari would win practivally all the following editions, with only Lancia in 1954 and Mercedes in 1955 to beat them.

Sixty-two years ago, in 1955, Hollywood film company Twentieth Century Fox had a hot property on its hands by the name of Kirk Douglas. They also owned the movie rights to a novel, 'The Racer', written by Hans Ruesch, a reasonably accomplished Italian/Swiss racing driver from the prewar era. As a movie, entitled 'The Racers', it introduced Hollywood and America to road racing.

Lifetime commerical and personal friendships were made at Alfa Romeo during the 1920s. Enzo Ferrari arrived there in 1920, Luigi Chinetti's first day on the job was September 12, 1923. One month later, the great engineer, Vittorio Jano, was recruited from FIAT. There is some question about who persuaded Jano to come to Alfa.

The 85th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, which was the third round of the 2017 FIA WEC series, was held at the great Sarthe circuit. Although the race is run over the weekend, it is the culmination of a week's build-up to the endurance classic, in and around the track, starting with the traditional scrutineering procedures in the town centre of Le Mans.

79MercatoThe Market has gone to sleep for now, waiting for the big August Auctions

Olivier Bidaud

These auctions were a futher test of the market, and the results point to no movement up or down. Most prices were in range, with more failing to sell. One thing to notice is that all the "big" Ferraris are not coming to market; it's taken up now with the later GT and street cars, and the new darlings, the "Supercars".
